Just to be here

The island Ryvingen is located outside the southern coast of Norway. Here you will find Ryvingen Lighthouse, the southernmost lighthouse in Norway.

The light at Ryvingen has guided seafarers since 1867. Today the light is automated, but the island and the station is open to the public.

This beautiful island amidst sun, wind and ocean offers a special escape from everyday life.

RYVINGEN LIGHTHOUSE

Ryvingen Lighthouse is the southernmost landmark for vessels along the southern coast of Norway.

The first beacon was lit 20th October 1867. The cast iron tower you see today was completed in 1897. At the time, it was the second most powerful lighthouse in the world. The same lens is still in use today.

The keepers’ houses were once home for up to 30 people, the lighthouse keepers and their families.  The children who grew up on the island even had their own school.

In 1957 the families moved from the island and the lighthouse keepers worked in shifts on the island. The light was automated in 2002.

FRIENDS OF RYVINGEN

Friends of Ryvingen lighthouse is a non-profit organization devoted to maintaining the buildings and surroundings on Ryvingen, and to keep it open to visitors. The Norwegian costal administration still operates the light signal as an aid to navigation.

Everyone is welcome to join as a member or to become a volunteer.
